FAQ
The questions we get asked
Short, honest answers. To go further, there's the help and the documentation.
What is Kaivo?
Kaivo is an AI companion to create websites and code. With one account you get the website (a chat with three modes: Chat, Code, and Create where Byte builds your website) and Kaivo CLI, an agent that installs in your terminal. You describe what you want in your own words; Kaivo writes the files, with your approval.
Who is Byte?
Byte is Kaivo's fox and the AI that builds your website in the Labs (Create mode). It's an AI system, not a person: check what it makes before publishing it.
What are the Labs?
The Create mode workspace. The chat with Byte is on the left; on the right you switch between Home (your project's dashboard and visitors), Create (your site's pages, the editor), Manage (payments, database, security scan, GitHub, AI) and the code Playground.
Can I publish my site?
Yes, in one click, at an address ending in .kaivoia.site. You can also download it as a ZIP or push it to your GitHub repository and host it wherever you want.
What's the difference between Chat and Code?
Chat is for everyday questions. Code is tuned for small programs, scripts and fixes: it gives the complete code first, then a short explanation. For a project with many files on your computer, use Kaivo CLI.
Do I need an API key?
No. You sign in with your Kaivo account, once. In Kaivo CLI, if you already have a key with a provider (OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, Groq) and prefer to use it, you can set it with /custom-key.
Is it free?
Yes, to start. There are no credits: a usage limit per 5-hour session and per week, shared by the website and Kaivo CLI, which resets on its own. Paid plans raise that limit. Models can be slower when many people use them.
What happens when I reach the limit?
Kaivo tells you when it resets. In the CLI you can keep going with your own API key (/custom-key): it takes over when the Kaivo model is unavailable or at its limit.
Are my conversations kept?
Yes, on your account. You can rename, pin, search, export to Markdown or delete them, one by one or all at once from the settings.
Is there a night mode?
Yes: the moon button at the top of the page switches between day and night. In the Labs, it's in your account menu (Appearance). Your choice is remembered in this browser.
Which systems does Kaivo CLI run on?
Windows 64-bit, macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel) and Linux (x64 and ARM64). Windows is the most tested; macOS and Linux are available but less proven. The website works in any recent browser.
Can Kaivo CLI break my project?
It only changes a file or runs a command after your approval, and you can always deny. Keep your project under Git so you can go back. To look at your code with no risk at all, run kaivo --read-only.
What happens to my code?
To answer, Kaivo sends a model your request and the files it needs (your site's files in the Labs, the file extracts it read in the CLI). Everything goes through Kaivo's servers, which pass it to the model provider. Avoid sharing files that contain secrets. Details are in the Privacy Policy.
How do I update Kaivo CLI?
Type kaivo -update. The downloaded file is checked (SHA-256) before it replaces the program.
“irm is not recognized”: what do I do?
You're in the Command Prompt. Open PowerShell and run the install command again.
I installed Kaivo but another program opens.
An old kaivo command comes first in your PATH. Run kaivo doctor: it tells you which. Then open a new terminal.
